Purpose of the Training
Nutrition is the use of nutrients required for growth, development, healthy living and physical activity by the organism through metabolic or biochemical pathways. The utilization of nutrients in the organism is not a simple process; it consists of complex events catalyzed by enzymes. Some of the diseases that develop due to enzyme deficiency or absence caused by a gene defect can be treated by eliminating non-metabolized nutrients from the diet or restricting their amount. Most metabolic disorders that emerge in the neonatal period are severe diseases and may be fatal if specific, effective treatment is not started immediately. For some metabolic diseases, nutrition therapy is currently the only treatment available. It is based on eliminating the toxic nutrient from the diet or reducing its amount. In almost all metabolic diseases, the intake of the substance whose metabolism is impaired, in other words the main component causing the disorder, must be restricted. The diet should halt the progression of the disease; otherwise, an unnecessary and costly treatment will have been applied. In this context, in order to enable the implementation of an accurate and healthy nutrition program for individuals with inborn errors of metabolism, graduate dietitians and 3rd- and 4th-year students will be taught how to plan nutrition in inborn errors of metabolism and malabsorption disorders, as well as the preventive measures and nutrition therapies for these diseases, and solutions will be discussed through case presentations.Who Is It For?
Dietitians who have graduated from an undergraduate program in Nutrition and Dietetics, as well as 3rd- and 4th-year students, may register for this course.
