Academics from Ankara Medipol University Faculty of Health Sciences and Ege University Faculty of Communication Collaborate on an Important Multidisciplinary Study

“Natural Disaster Awareness Is of Great Importance”
Academics from Ankara Medipol University Faculty of Health Sciences and Ege University Faculty of Communication have collaborated on an important multidisciplinary study. Developed under an open call launched by the Institute of Economic Development and Social Researches, the project ranked among the top 100 of 1,107 applications and was selected for support. It focuses on the importance of internal communication during natural disasters.

A preliminary study found that students lack sufficient and accurate knowledge of what to do in the event of a natural disaster, and these findings formed the starting point of the project. The project team consists of five people: three academics, a doctoral student and a communication specialist.
Dr. Zehra Batu, a faculty member at the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ankara Medipol University Faculty of Health Sciences, said: “Since the extent of the damage caused by disasters can vary depending on how prepared the affected community is, research shows that differences in levels of preparedness, awareness and knowledge can influence the outcomes of disasters. Solidarity and mutual support, which lie at the heart of Turkish culture, also come to the fore in times of disaster. It can be said that at such times, people unite around a single goal and work together to overcome the disaster.”
