Education

Instruction in the Turkish Preparatory Program is organized according to students' current Turkish proficiency and learning needs. The program aims to help students develop their core language skills step by step and use Turkish effectively in daily life, social relationships and academic settings.

Level System and Duration of Study

The Turkish Preparatory Program consists of four levels, A1, A2, B1 and B2, each lasting nine weeks. The standard duration of the program is two semesters. Students attend 24 hours of classes per week at the level in which they are placed.

The level system ensures that language learning progresses gradually. While the beginner levels focus on basic communication needs and everyday language use, the higher levels emphasize understanding more complex texts, justifying opinions, participating in discussions and using academic language.

By the end of the program, students are expected to reach B2-level Turkish proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Course Content

Listening, reading, speaking and writing skills are addressed in classes in a mutually reinforcing way. Work on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and punctuation is linked to the development of these skills.

The program focuses on the following areas:

  • Listening: Understanding everyday conversations, announcements, explanations and level-appropriate academic lectures.
  • Reading: Obtaining information from different types of texts; identifying the main idea, details and the relationships between ideas.
  • Speaking: Communicating in everyday situations, describing experiences, expressing opinions, participating in discussions and giving presentations.
  • Writing: Producing level-appropriate sentences, paragraphs and texts; expressing ideas clearly, coherently and in an organized manner.
  • Linguistic competence: Using Turkish sound, word and sentence structures appropriately for communicative purposes.

Teaching and Learning Process

The teaching process is designed to help students learn by using Turkish and to encourage their active participation in class. Through level-appropriate individual work, pair work and group activities, students develop their language skills across a variety of communicative situations.

Topics covered in class are related to the needs students may encounter in daily life and in the university environment. Students' skills in asking questions, requesting clarification, sharing information, solving problems and working collaboratively are supported.

Through feedback, students are encouraged to recognize their strengths and the areas they need to improve, and to take greater responsibility for their learning by reviewing their spoken and written work.

Academic and Cultural Dimension

Turkish Preparatory Education also includes academic language development that supports students' participation in university life. As the levels progress, activities move from understanding course instructions and communicating with university units to note-taking, summarizing, giving presentations and writing well-reasoned texts.

The program also helps students become familiar with daily life and diverse cultural practices in Türkiye, share their own experiences and communicate appropriately in multicultural settings.

Exams and Assessment

Exams and assessments during Turkish Preparatory Education are conducted in accordance with the established academic calendar. Assessment is based on students' language development in line with the objectives and learning outcomes of the relevant level.

Exam and assessment results help monitor students' Turkish proficiency and identify their learning needs. Throughout the program, students are expected to use their language knowledge in different contexts and to develop their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills together.
