Farabi Exchange Programme

What is the Farabi Exchange Programme?

Farabi (871-950) was born in 871 in the city of Farab in Turkestan. He travelled to the major centres of learning of his time, such as Bukhara, Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo, Harran and Aleppo. He wrote works on philosophy, mathematics, logic, political science and music. In the Islamic world, his fame in philosophy is so great that he is compared to Aristotle, known as Muallim-i Evvel (the First Teacher), and he is referred to as Muallim-i Sani (the Second Teacher). In the Western world he is known as “Alpharabius”. He died in Damascus in 950.

The Farabi Exchange Programme, short for the Student and Faculty Member Exchange Programme Between Higher Education Institutions, is an exchange programme for students and faculty members between higher education institutions offering associate, undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes within universities and institutes of high technology.

The Farabi Exchange Programme enables students or faculty members to continue their education and teaching activities at a higher education institution other than their own for one or two semesters. The programme is carried out through a “Farabi Exchange Programme Protocol” signed between two higher education institutions. Through this protocol, the signatory institutions commit to cooperating with each other in carrying out joint activities and programmes within the scope of the programme.

Students enrolled in higher education institutions may take part in student exchange under the Farabi Exchange Programme. The duration of the student exchange is a minimum of one and a maximum of two semesters.

  • Students in the preparatory year or first year of associate and undergraduate programmes are not eligible for the Farabi Exchange Programme. Master's and doctoral students are not eligible during their preparatory and scientific preparatory periods or during the first semester of their main programme.
  • Students take the courses they are required to take in their current semester at the host university. Courses may also be selected from lower and upper years at the host institution; in the exchange, the credits of the courses are taken into account rather than the number of courses.

Higher education institutions publish a call for applications setting out the application requirements for each semester. The first call is published before 15 March and the second before 15 October. Exchange procedures for the following semester are completed before the end of the semester in which the call is published.

Student Application Requirements (Minimum Conditions)

  • The student must be an associate, undergraduate, master's or doctoral student enrolled in a formal (face-to-face) higher education programme,
  • Associate and undergraduate students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0/4,
  • Master's and doctoral students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5/4.
  • Students may participate in the Farabi Exchange Programme once at each level of study. However, a student may be a Farabi Exchange Programme scholarship holder only once, for one semester, throughout their education.

Tuition Fees

Throughout their time as Farabi Exchange Programme students, students continue to register at their home institutions and pay their tuition fees there. Students participating in the exchange may not suspend their enrolment. Students do not pay any additional tuition fees to the host institution under the exchange programme.

Faculty Member Mobility and Scope

This mobility covers the teaching activities carried out by a faculty member of one higher education institution at another higher education institution. All faculty members working at higher education institutions may participate in faculty member mobility.

Duration of Faculty Member Mobility

Faculty member mobility may last a minimum of one and a maximum of two semesters within an academic year. This activity also covers summer school programmes.
